All for Sugar

PASHON Minott — daughter of late singer and sound system operator Sugar Minott — is celebrating her father’s life, this time in a charitable way.

For the past seven years, the Sugar Minott Day Tribute celebrates his birthday on May 25 and that aspect remains the same. However, this year, part-proceeds from the event will go towards assisting the Walker’s Place of Safety. This follows a previous donation made by Youth Promotion (Minott’s record label) alongside Wright’s Way Foundation last month to the children’s home.

“We donated a barrel of school supplies, clothing, shoes, toiletries, toys, food and cash. We feel that everyone should try and donate, no matter how small,” Minott told the Jamaica Observer.

Wards of the Walker’s Place of Safety were displaced when its Kingston residence burnt on Lyndhurst Crescent in January. Two female wards perished in the blaze. The remaining wards now occupy three homes in throughout the Corporate Area.

The late singer’s daughter said her action mirrors that of her father.

“He was always helping people, even if what he had was his last, he would give it away,” she said.

A week-long series of events will prelude the day tribute which all takes place at the Youth Promotions HQ on Robert Crescent in Kingston.

“We will have guest speakers like King Jammy’s, Mutabaruka… People who would have been around in my dad’s career,” she said.

The tribute will unfold on May 25.

“We’re gonna have performances by Bounty Killer, Errol Dunkley, we have new artistes on the show as well, because Daddy was always promoting new youths in the business. We have some of his grandchildren who have entered the business performing too,” said Minott.

Sugar Minott (given name Lincoln Barrington Minott) became familiar with sound system operations before he was a teenager. He worked with the Sound of Silence Keystone and Gathering of Youth, before working at Clement “Coxsone” Dodd’s Studio One. As the principal of Youthman Promotion, he worked with artistes like Barrington Levy, Tony Tuff, Tenor Saw and Barry Brown.

As a singer, he is known for songs including Vanity, Mr DC and Hard Time Pressure.

Minott died in 2010 at the age of 54.
