Jamaica won 27 medals in three sporting events at the 21st Commonwealth Games which came to an end yesterday in Gold Coast, Australia.

It’s the most the country has ever won at the Games, compared to 22 at both Glasgow and Melbourne. The quality of those medals were, however, better, with 10 gold each, compared to seven this year.

As expected, track and field accounted for the majority of the medals — 25 comprising seven gold, eight silver and 10 bronze — while there was one silver in swimming and a bronze in netball.

Jamaica had their largest-ever delegation to a Commonwealth Games with 110 athletes taking part in 15 sporting events.

In athletics, thrower Danniel Thomas-Dodd, who had a new national record of 19.36m in the women’s shot put, and Fedric Dacres, who set a games record of 68.20m, while American-born Aisha Praught-Leer won Jamaica’s first-ever gold medal at a major championships in the 3,000m steeplechase.

Ronald Levy, in the men’s 110m hurdles; Janieve Russell, in the women’s 400m hurdles; Kimberly Williams, in the women’s triple jump; and the women’s 4x400m relay team also won gold medals.

Hansle Parchment in the men’s 110m hurdles, Traves Smikle in the men’s discus throw, Christania Williams in the women’s 100m, Danielle Williams in the women’s 110m hurdles, Shericka Jackson in the women’s 200m, Anastacia Leroy in the women’s 400m, Shanieka Ricketts in the women’s triple jump and the women’s 4x100m relay team won silver medals.

Yohan Blake in the men’s 100m, Javon Francis in the men’s 400m, Jaheel Hydel in the men’s 400m hurdles, Tevaughn Thomas in the men’s T47 100m, Gayon Evans in the women’s 100m, Yanique Thompson in the women’s’ 100m hurdles, Stephenie-Ann McPherson in the women’s 400m, and Natoya Goule in the women’s 800m as well as both men’s relay teams all won bronze medals.

Swimmer Alia Atkinson won silver in the 50m breaststroke, while the netball team took the bronze after beating new Zealand 60-55.
