Dear Editor,

As one who was born in close proximity to the sea I am taken aback at how our actions have had deleterious effects on our beaches and the parrotfish.

I am saddened by the lack of care for the almost extinction of the parrotfish due to the lionfish and acts of mankind.

We need more fishing sanctuaries to actually get the parrotfish population to where it was in former years. We need to activate a plan to make catching of the parrotfish illegal. When this is done we will have to monitor the plan with people who police the sea to ensure that the rules are adhered to.

The garbage which renders the sea polluted also needs to be controlled. We cannot continue to disrespect the sea. We have to look at the man in the mirror and make some very crucial decisions to embark on a path which will see us improving this abysmal position.

Ralph Waldo Emerson once said, “Nothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasm.” We have got to be positive in our dispositions to save the parrotfish. The beaches need these fish to replenish the source of the natural sand which the tourists relish so much and from which we generate tourism dollars annually.
