Fletcher hospitalised after motor vehicle accident
MONTEGO BAY, St James — National striker Jourdaine Fletcher was yesterday admitted to the Cornwall Regional Hospital following a motor vehicle accident which occured earlier in the day as he was returning home from a party in Negril.
Reports on the accident are sketchy. However, the former Cornwall College striker was reportedly taken to the Savanna-la-Mar hospital in an unconscious state, but later fled the medical institution, one source told the Jamaica Observer yesterday.
A medical source told the Observer yesterday that a CT scan had been recommended for Fletcher — who represented San Jacinto Junior College in Houston, Texas, last season — as he showed symptoms of a concussion when he was taken to the doctor in Montego Bay.
Rumours swirled on Monday morning as the 20-year-old was reported to have been involved in an accident that claimed five lives in Hopewell, Hanover, involving partygoers returning to Montego Bay from the same party.
Checks by the Observer revealed that Fletcher, who represented the Reggae Boyz in 2016, the same year he led Cornwall College to the ISSA daCosta Cup title and to the final of the FLOW Super Cup KO, was involved in another accident.
Efforts to ascertain if there were other passengers in the car have so far yielded nothing, but it is believed that the car that Fletcher was driving collided with another vehicle going in the opposite direction.
Fletcher, it was heard, was taken to the Savanna-la-Mar hospital in an unconscious state, but later when he regained consciousness left the institution and returned to Montego Bay.
Reports are that upon returning to Montego Bay, he called a female family member and complained of pains all over his body, and that one side of his face was swollen and he was lapsing in and out of consciousness.
He was taken to a Montego Bay-based doctor’s office who examined him and then took him to the Cornwall Regional Hospital where he was admitted.
It was reported that his mother and two former teammates — Peter-Lee Vassell and Deshane Beckford — were with him at the medical institution.
Fletcher set local football alight in the 2016 season when he scored over 40 goals for Cornwall College, then scored on his Red Stripe Premier League debut for Montego Bay United, netting the winner as he came off the bench against Harbour View in a game played at WesPow Park.
He also made his debut for the Theodore Whitmore-led Reggae Boyz before taking up a scholarship at San Jacinto Junior College.
However, Fletcher transferred to Eastern Florida Junior College after the San Jacinto sports department decided to pull the plug on the sport, but he left the Florida school and returned home earlier this year.
