Hydel make it 13 straight at JISA/Tastee Prep Champs
Hydel Prep swept their 13th-straight JISA/Tastee National Track and Field Championships with an imposing 115-point victory over nearest rivals Vaz Prep as the curtains came down on the three-day meet at the National Stadium on Saturday.
The champions produced an all-around powerhouse display to amass an impressive 310 points compared to the 195 scored by Vaz.
The vastly improved Emmanuel Christian Academy finished third on 129, while Quest on 114.5 and Sts Peter & Paul with 85.5 completed the top five.
Leading by 22 points heading into the final day, the champions never let up, as they kept widening the gap after virtually each event on the track. Quite fittingly, they were the last school to break a record when they took gold in the girls’ 4x200m Open Relay with 1:42.48 minutes, smashing their own record of 1:48.67 minutes set back in 2016.
The Corey Bennett-coached team also took gold in the only new event added to the championships, the Class One 60m hurdles for girls and boys. Jody-Ann Daley, who set the record of 9.92secs in the semi-finals, obliged in the final with 9.94secs. Her teammate Kayanna Brown took the bronze as they were split by Tanoya McGregor of Wolmer’s.
Andre Smith, who set the boys’ record of 9.48secs in the semis, took the gold in the final as his teammate Joshua Edwards took the silver to underline the dominance of Hydel in the new event. Rashad Buckle of Portmore Missionary took the bronze.
But while Hydel took the overall glory, Vaz Prep had reasons of their own to celebrate as Jounee Armstrong and Edward Sterling were crowned Class One champion girl and boy, respectively.
Armstrong, who won gold in the Class One long jump with a record on Friday, returned on Saturday to win gold in the 100m and 200m finals, while Sterling took gold in the 400m and 200m to add to his silver medal in the Class One high jump.
Emmanuel Christian Academy were also in celebratory mood as their Class Two champion athlete Michael-Andre Edwards broke the long jump record on his first jump in the finals before winning gold in the 100m and silver in the 150m to score a total of 25 points for his school.
In Class Three, Joshua Rattray was the top boy for Emmanuel Christain Academy as he won gold in the 50m and silver in the 100m for 16 points and the champion boy trophy.
The irrepressible Alecia Latore of Hydel was the top girl in Class Two, as she destroyed the field in the 100m and 150m for her two gold medals to go along with silver in the long jump to emphasise her versatility.
The champion girl for Class Three was shared between Ayanna Blake of Mona and Najae Brown of Vaz. Blake got the better of Brown in the 50m, but Brown turned the table in the 100m as they both finished with 16 points.
The final event of the day went to New Horizon Prep who were led home by the impressive 100m champion Zachary Cox, who had to make up a lot of ground to claim his second gold medal of the championships.
