Over 160 swimmers compete in Milo-sponsored swim meet
MONTEGO BAY, St James —
Over 160 swimmers from a mix of 14 clubs and schools recently participated in the third annual staging of the Milo Swim Meet in the western region, held at the training base of SailFish Swimming Academy at WesPoW Park, Irwin in St James.
The meet saw eight trophy winners from the participants in the various categories, which came from swim clubs Kaizen, Marlins, Royals, Swimaz Aquatic, ‘Y’ Speedos, Negril Wave Runners, and Makos, while Corporate Area high schools Kingston College and Campion College also participated.
The swimmers had the opportunity to participate in this year’s staging, under the auspices of the title sponsor Milo, and corporate sponsors NSWMA, Tourism Product Development Company, Trelawny Cooperative Credit Union and SailFish Swim Academy. Administrative support was provided through the event’s main volunteer — the Key Club of Mount Alvernia High.
Zaneta Alvaranga, who is now in China as part of the Jamaica/China Technical Cooperation Project on Sports Coaching programme, won the Girls’ Under-13 section.
Fellow Milo swim meet competitors Tiara Campbell and Paris Claire, are also in China for the 60–day training stint.
In other results, Danica Jackson won the six-year-old and under category for girls; Arush Rochalani for the boys; the eight and under category for girls went to Victoria Vanderleer; while Talon Longmore won for the boys’ section; 9 – 10 girls’ section was won by Renae Chung and Josh Johnson in the boys equivalent; 11 – 12 girls’ Leanna Wainwright and Devaughn Robe in the boys’; 13 and over boys’ went to Jaleel Samms.
Nestlé Jamaica consumer marketing manager for Milo, Chris-Anthony Salter, was pleased with the outcome of the annual swim meet.
“The event was the perfect way to get these children to do something they love. It gave them an opportunity to showcase their talents and be active,” he said.
He added that the purpose for the Milo-sponsored event was to create a platform for the children to engage in more physical activity, which is key to living healthier lives.
“Milo remains committed to sporting initiatives such as this swim meet that turns the spotlight on teams and or individuals engaging in healthy active lifestyles; while enhancing the quality of life of their customers and consumers and contributing to a healthier future are the cornerstone of Nestlé’s business,” he reasoned.
