Summer reads
There’s nothing like reading to ward off summer learning loss and keep children and young adults engaged during the long, lazy days of summer. Whether at the beach, poolside, or on the pillows before bedtime, these titles should keep them more than entertained. Here is our fourth list of three titles.
The Female Persuasion
by Meg Wolitzer
There is an absolute twist of fate when Geer Kadetsky, a teenager, starts her journey on a path in life that she never imagined. She had her life all planned with her boyfriend, Cory, but when she meets Faith Frank everything changes. Faith is represented as a woman of purpose and a representative of women’s advocacy.
After meeting Faith and spending time with her, Geer is pushed to find a new purpose in life and makes use of a career opportunity. She is now on a path that is exciting and beneficial but which turns her completely away from her previously planned love story with her high school sweetheart, Cory. Geer’s character has now been transformed from a shy high school student to a strong, witty girl making the most of a life she now believes is best for her.

I am Enough
by Grace Byers
As the title suggests, I am Enough teaches young girls to love themselves for who they are, particularly in physical terms, and to appreciate the ways in which they are different from others. It also teaches kindness and respect for others inspite of differences. Its broader social themes are self-esteem, self-reliance, bullying, and emotions.
As it’s a children title, it’s written in the form of a lyrical ode and as Byers says, is great for mothers and daughters.

BLOOM — The Essential Journey: A New Guide to Balance, Growth & Well-Being
by Olubode Shawn Brown
As far as self-help books go, BLOOM appeals to a wide audience, targeting not only individuals but organisations and communities too, with its programme of self-discovery designed to help unleash abilities to deliver gifts, talents, projects and ideas to the world. It’s a guidebook for so-called BLOOMERS — a movement of people seeking to live more authentic lives.
Using the author’s stories and experiences curated from a 20-year life-coaching career, BLOOM takes readers on a path of exploring physical and mental wellness to create a life-balancing paradigm rooted in the five elements of nature — earth, water, fire, air, and quintessence/space. The five life nutrients, that balance and grow our lives; five life areas, in which we have activities and from which we draw the five life nutrients that balance and grow our lives; 25 new personality archetypes, to help us understand how our best qualities often become our worst –hindering our capacity to grow; and five dragon fears, the ones to which we are each uniquely vulnerable, are some of the themes around which the work is organised.
