Arnett Gardens march into mid-season final after big win
Four goals by Shanel Spence propelled Arnett Gardens to a 7-0 trouncing of Trelawny Women’s on Saturday, as they marched into the mid-season final of the Jamaica Football Federation/Lascelles Employees and Partners Co-operative Credit Union Women’s Premier League competition.
Playing in front of a small gathering including the legendary Walter Boyd at Charlie Smith High School, Spence netted in the 15th, 41st, 45th and 77th minutes to take her tally to 10 goals for the season.
Former National player Rena Gordon outsped the backline and beat the goalkeeper in minute 52. The outstanding Shanise Foster converted from the penalty spot in the 71st minute, as did substitute Shakira Douglas in the 83rd minute.
It was Arnett’s fourth-consecutive win and consolidated top spot in a Group B with 12 points. Trelawny Women’s remained on five points but slipped to third with an inferior goal difference to Olympic Gardens, who played to a 0-0 draw with SC Monarchs — fourth with four points.
The inactive Waterhouse had already topped Group A with 12 points from their four games and will meet Arnett Gardens in a mouth-watering Mid-Season final.
Arnett’s Head Coach Denton Shedden was pleased with his team’s performance, which produced their biggest win of the season.
“I am very pleased. As you can see we are getting a little more condition and it showed on the field today,” said Shedden.
Arnett Gardens and Waterhouse are now the only two unbeaten teams in the 10-team league, and the former Arnett Gardens player — now coach — is looking forward to that game.
“That clash is supposed to be a good one, seeing that they won all their games like us. But we have a knockout game on Wednesday so my concentration will be on that now,” he noted.
It was a game that Arnett Gardens should have won by a much wider margin, but after scoring early they seemed to have drifted into a nonchalant mood without any urgency.
Shanel Spence, Shanise Foster, Rena Gordon, Kadian Edwards, Rhonda Rhooms and Shaday Shirley had things their own way as they were much quicker to the ball and were clearly more talented than the Trelawny outfit. If it were not for the hard tackling Odette Brown in defence and the competent Pretria Campbell in goal, the scoreline could have easily been in double digits.
Meanwhile, St Ann Women’s whipped Rangers FC 3-0 at the St Mary Sports Complex and consolidated second spot on seven points behind Waterhouse in Group A. St Ann Women’s are just ahead of Cavalier on goal difference. Cavalier edged Frazsiers Whip 1-0 at Alpha Institute field and are also on seven points. Newcomers Frazsiers Whip remained in fourth spot on three points with Rangers at the bottom pointless.
