‘Big Rob’ ready to make impact in St Catherine South Eastern
THE Jamaica Labour Party’s (JLP) freshly minted candidate for St Catherine South Eastern Robert Miller says he is ready to make a big difference as the party’s candidate/caretaker in the constituency.
“Big Rob”, as he is affectionately called, believes that the time has come for true representation to reach the constituents of St Catherine South Eastern.
The constituency includes the political divisions of Waterford, Edgewater, Bridgeport, Westchester and Independence City.
“I grew up in this constituency and was educated here. Not much has changed after decades of misrepresentation, so I was humbled when the party leader placed his confidence in me to be the standard-bearer for the JLP here,” said Miller, a past student of Bridgeport High School
Miller was presented to constituents Sunday night, at Southborough Primary School in Portmore, by JLP Leader Andrew Holness.
The People’s National Party’s Colin Fagan retained the seat in the 2016 election by a margin of 395 votes, but Miller believes that he will be able to make the difference and bring the seat home.
“A lot of work has been done in this constituency over the years and a deficit of 1671 votes in 2011 has been cut down to 395. That is just a signal of the work that is to come,” Miller explained.
The JLP last held the seat in 1983 when it was uncontested and the incumbent, Kingsley Sangster was elected unopposed by acclamation. Sangster won the seat in the 1980 election, claiming more than 64 per cent of the votes.
Miller believes that he can return the constituency to the JLP and is confident that his workers and team will have a big impact on the constituency, with focus on youth employment, sports development, health care and education.
