Top seeds take lead in WBA Division One semis
MONTEGO BAY, St James — Top seeds MoBay Boys’ Club Warriors and UWI-West Jamaica Conference Jayhawks took one-game leads in their Western Basketball Association’s Men’s Division One best-of-three semi-finals that got under way last weekend at the Montego Bay Cricket Club.
On Saturday, Warriors scored an 80-69 win over Darliston Mystros and a day later UWI-WJC Jayhawks were awarded the game after Holland Blue Rebels failed to show for their game.
The semi-finals will continue this coming weekend with the second set of games.
Warriors, who ended the regular season tied at the top of the table with Jayhawks, got off to a good start and continued to build on their lead before a late rally by the Westmoreland team.
Led by a game-high 26 points from Ralique Grant, Warriors led by six points, 19-13, after the first quarter, but pushed the margin to double figures at half-time where they led 42-31.
They increased the lead to 19 points at the end of the third quarter, 65-46, before easing off the gas in the final quarter as Mystros had a mini-rally.
Okieffe Noble supported Grant with 14 points, Andre Hayles scored 10, while Rhyeem Barrett grabbed 11 rebounds for the winners.
Dylon Hodges had a double-double for Mystros with 18 points and 12 rebounds as Terrence Tate scored 24 points in the losing effort.
