Arnett Gardens snatch point in testy RSPL clash with Waterhouse
A goal in the second minute of added time at the end of the game by Ronaldo Wright helped Arnett Gardens snatch a point away at Waterhouse, in yet another testy Red Stripe Premier League encounter between the two teams on Sunday.
The strike cancelled out the second-half effort of Tremaine Stewart as the game ended 1-1.
The first half was played at a very frenetic pace as both teams sought to recover from losses last weekend. The host team dominated early as Arnett Gardens goalkeeper Damion Hyatt was relied on a number of occasions by the likes of Girvon Brown, Kenroy Howell and Stephen Williams.
The Waterhouse custodian Diego Haughton had a quiet evening up until just after the half-hour mark, when he was called into action in quick succession. He produced a brilliant reflex save to deny Vishinul Harris, whose header was destined for the back of the net. Then Fabian Reid came close but Haughton again came up big to stop a drive that was heading for the right-bottom corner of the goal.
The Waterhouse fans were left in shock shortly before the break when Girvon Brown was involved in the miss of the night after he failed to get his shot on target from three yards out. The ball appeared to hit the striker on the shins more than it was directed towards the goal.
The second half was meandering along, dotted with hard fouls and frequent stoppages when Tremaine Stewart brought the game to life. The midfielder curled a beautiful free kick into the top-left corner of the net beyond the despairing dive of Hyatt with 20 minutes left to play.
Substitute Ricardo Samuels had a glorious opportunity to put the game to bed for Waterhouse with less than three minutes on the clock. He was played through on goal but barely made contact with the ball, which Hyatt gleefully accepted.
Just when it appeared the game was over, Wright popped up to fire home a Kemal Malcolm cross from the edge of the area in his first start of the season, clearly justifying the selection of his coach Jerome Waite.
There was still enough time after the goal for Malcolm to get himself sent off by Referee Oshane Nation for violent conduct.
Waterhouse Assistant Coach Akino Morgan was at a loss to explain how his team ended the game with only a single point.
“It is somewhat disappointing because we had the game to take all three points, but a lack of concentration caused us to give up a goal right at 90 plus, so it’s a hard one to take. We just have to get back to the drawing board and come back again,” he said.
Waite praised the work rate of his goalscorer, who was getting his second goal against Waterhouse FC.
“He has been working assiduously and he has been a part of the Arnett Gardens team for the past three seasons. He scored against Waterhouse last season at the Anthony Spaulding Sports Complex so it’s not a situation where he has not delivered already, so it must be a good feeling for him.”
