Scotiabank stop Sagicor Group 5-2 to cop JamClear Cup
A new champion was crowned in the 2018 Western Sports-sponsored Inter-Bank JamClear Cup final last Sunday at Winchester Park, when Scotiabank defeated Sagicor Group 5-2 to cop their first JamClear Cup Trophy.
In an evenly contested first half, Sagicor took the lead in the 31st minute after Andre Wilson picked up a loose ball which was not cleared properly by the Scotiabank defenders on top of the 18-yard box and unleashed a powerful shot which beat goalkeeper Antonio Millington.
Scotiabank were on level terms in the 38th minute when Steven Barnett scored the first of his three goals. He received a ball which was crossed in the box from Kemar Cummings and side-footed past goalkeeper Chad Graham to make it 1-1.
It was 2-1 three minutes later as a cross from Kemar Douglas was headed past the hapless Graham by Barnett, who out-jumped the Sagicor defenders.
Captain Stefan Bartley made it 3-1 on the resumption in the 51st minute when he went on a solo run and beat two defenders and an advancing Graham with a powerful shot.
Sagicor Group cut the deficit in the 80th minute when Andre Powell got the better of defender Fabian Depass and kicked past Millington from an acute angle.
The University of the West Indies Premier League player Davion Garrison made it 4-2 six minutes later when he got a ball from Kemar Cummings and scored.
Barnett completed his hat-trick in the 88th minute when he got a defence-splitting pass from Sanjay Maturah which he ran on to and shot powerfully through the goalkeeper’s hand.
Inter-Bank football champions Bank of Jamaica and JamClear Cup champions Scotiabank were to meet in the Champion of Champions match yesterday at Winchester Park, St George’s College.
