11 new witnesses for trial of three alleged ‘death squad’ cops
KINGSTON, Jamaica — The murder trial of three police officers alleged to be a part of the “death squad” in Clarendon has been adjourned until 2:00 pm.
Detective Corporal Kevin Adams, District Constable Howard Brown and Constable Carl Bucknor are charged with the September 5, 2011 murder of Andrew Bisson.
The trial was scheduled to start in the morning however, when the case was called up before the trial judge Chief Justice Bryan Sykes, it was revealed that 11 new witnesses were added to the indictment and that statements including that of an expert witness were served on the defence on Friday.
Additionally, the court learnt that both parties were unable to meet and therefore did not get an opportunity to decide on the statements that are to be agreed.
This new development however did not sit well with Justice Sykes who reasoned that the action by the prosecution could be gleaned as an attempt to have the matter postponed despite his insistence that the trial start today.
He also argued that this has not only the disrupted prosecution’s case but has hampered his own preparation.
As a result he pointed out that the prosecution will not be allowed to continue its bad habit of adding witness statements to the indictment as it pleases and instructed both parties to meet for the agreement of the statements.
The matter was as a result adjourned but when the parties returned the adjournment was further extended.
The prosecution team is again being led by Queens Counsel Caroline Hay while the defence teams include Queen Counsels Kenneth Churchill Neita and Valerie Neita-Robertson well as Dwight Reece.
