A five straight ‘Flyer’
IT is often said that horses are made for courses and in the case of K D Flyer , the course is the five-furlong (1,000m) straight.
Running in Overnight Allowance company for the second time over the straight course, K D Flyer (Dane Dawkins) outbattled Disability Charm (Robert Halledeen) and Orpheus (Shane Ellis) by three parts of a length.
Three of K D Flyer’s four career victories have come over the straight.
Prior to Wednesday’s win, the Silent Valor offspring won on debut over the straight course on July 22 of last year, beating Milagro by 1 3/4 lengths in 1:00.2.
His second win over the distance was on April 7 of this year when he beat Lady Jaela by 1/2 length a in 1:00.1, and K D Flyer’s third was on August 26 when getting the better of Runjohnny Run by 1/2 a length in 59.4.
His other win was over six furlongs (1,200m) on December 9 of last year, defeating Bruce Wayne in a time of 1:13.0.
K D Flyer got a good break from the number nine draw and was disputing the early lead with Twilight Dreams (Dane Nelson) and Sir Budget (Anthony Thomas), with Orpheus just behind.
When they went by the dummy rails, K D Flyer and Disability Charm were locked together with Orpheus gaining on the inside. Inside the final half furlong (100m), K D Flyer got the upper hand and edged away.
The final time of 58.1 was backed up with splits of 22.3 and 44.3.
“He ( K D Flyer) is just a genuine horse. I mean, I can’t get a race up the straight for him in Overnight Allowance company, and if I run him going around the bend it will take a couple of months to bring him back. And so, I just decided to wait on the straight races whenever they come.
“He now qualifies for the Open Allowance level and we will see what he does up there and we can move along from there,” trainer Gary Subratie shared.
