Nunes banking on Bigdaddykool in trainers’ title race
Bigdaddykool is title-chasing trainer Anthony Nunes, main hope in the Diamond Mile, the region’s most lucrative horse racing event at Caymanas Park tomorrow. At present, Nunes is locked in battle for the title with Wayne DaCosta. Going into the Diamond Mile Race Day, DaCosta holds the monetary advantage, just under $1 million over Nunes.
The Diamond Mile, sponsored by the Betting, Gaming and Lotteries Commission (BGLC) and Supreme Ventures Limited (SVL) carries a winner’s purse of over $6 million, which might be enough for Nunes or DaCosta to win the championship.
Nunes is hoping that his charge, who finished second in the last two Diamond Mile races can find a place on the board tomorrow.
“It is going to be hard to even run second here again because you have She’s A Maneater and Will In Charge who are two tough horses to separate and so it is going to be difficult,” Nunes predicted.
He then explained the change in rider from Linton Steadman to Dick Cardenas.
“He ( Bigdaddykool) is carrying 54.0 kgs in the race and if he had like 56.0 or 57.0 then Steadman would be riding. Linton can’t catch that weight, that’s why Dick Cardenas is on board,” explained Nunes.
Bigdaddykool returned from a 107-day lay-up due to injury setbacks and ran a blistering race to take the Nigel B Nunes Memorial Cup over nine furlongs and 25 yards (1,820m) on October 15. He covered the distance in 1:53.0 with splits of 26.0, 49.4, 1:14.2 and 1:39.2 and was touted to have a big say in the recent Superstakes. However, he was beaten out of sight by both She’s A Maneater and Will In Charge in the 10-furlong (2,000m) event.
“That run was not good and we have not found a reason for it. I think maybe when horses come off a lay-off and they run such a good race coming off that break, that he [ Bigdaddykool] was bounced coming out of the race. We are hoping that is what happened to him, and the hope is that Bigdaddykool will bounce back to himself now,” Nunes said.
