Champions Barbican make entry in 2019 Magnum KSAFA Super League
DEFENDING champions Barbican FC will face Meadforest when they make their entry in the 2019 Magnum KSAFA Super League football competition, during the opening game of a Zone A double-header at Constant Spring Complex today beginning at 6:30 pm.
In the second match, Molynes United, a semi-finalist last season, will play home team, last season’s Major League champions Constant Spring, in a game scheduled to start at 8:30 pm.
Also, today marks the kick-off in the Magnum KSAFA Major League with Zone A matches. Zone B matches will be played tomorrow. All Major League matches will kick off at 3:00 pm.
The Super League was scheduled to get under way with a double-header last night of Zone B matches at Harbour View Mini Stadium. Today’s double-header falls in line with this season’s competition format that comprises night-time double-headers on Fridays, Saturdays and Tuesdays.
Barbican defeated Brown’s Town to win last year’s title, and they advanced to the all-island play-offs where they challenged for a place in the National Premier League.
Expectations for a similar run might well be part of their thinking this season, but Chris James, who heads the Barbican FC outfit, was quite reserved about their desired goals this time around. He noted that they are not 100 per cent ready for the opening match up against Meadforest, but will be guided by their ambition of securing three points at every juncture.
“For the opening game the team is a little bit short of work in terms of fitness; the fitness level is not there,” shared James, a veteran coach and administrator in the sport.
“We’ve a reasonable squad, I think we can perform well. We always play to win; we’ll take it one game at a time,” he noted of their long-term goal.
Based on player complement his team is in good stead, with a strong core still at their disposal including leading marksman, Andrew Christie, along with Akeem Brown, Andrew White, Loxley Thompson and defender Andrew McLeod, another lead figure in their team.
The closing encounter is expected to be well contested by Molynes United and Danny Lyn’s Constant Spring, a team at the turn of the 1990s that once rubbed shoulders with the nation’s best in the National Premier League, and also played in a Premier League final when they had the likes of burly striker Ramon Christian, who went on to become a national representative.
They have been outside top-flight competition for some time and will no doubt be looking to make their mark in the Magnum KSAFA Super League, which is a stepping stone to the Premier League.
