Montague to give update on transport sector plans at high-level conference
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Minister of Transport and Mining Robert Montague is to give an update on his vision for the reformation and restoration of order to the country’s transport sector during his keynote address at the Transport Stakeholders Conference today.
According to the transport ministry, Montague will make several announcements and expand on his plans to make the sector work in a more mutually beneficial manner for all stakeholders, including commuters, transport operators and regulators.
The one-day conference is being held under the theme ‘Driving Jamaica into the future’ at the Jamaica Conference Centre in downtown Kingston. It is set to begin at 9:30 am and end at 3:00 pm.
The engagement will provide a medium for additional engagement between policymakers and other stakeholders groups, the ministry said.
Montague outlined 16 proposals for the transformation and reformation of the sector in May last year, two months after assuming the role of transport minister. The proposals were made during his contribution to the 2017/2018 Sectoral Debate in Parliament.
Among the recommendations was for the opening up of all public transportation routes. Montague said that people should be able to design and craft their own routes and apply for it to be registered.
The minister had also recommended the implementation of a stipulated vehicle locator system to bring greater accountability and enhance the security of both transport operators and commuters.
