Exciting action in Girls Open basketball competition
WAKEFIELD, Trelawny – Mt Alvernia High took over the sole leadership of the ISSA Western Conference Girls Open basketball competition after winning their top-of-the-table clash of unbeaten teams with Herbert Morrison Technical at Muschett High on Thursday.
The former two-time champions won the low-scoring game (29-22) and ran their record to four wins, while Herbert Morrison slipped to three wins and a loss.
In the other game of the double header, Muschett High won their first game of the season, ending a three-game losing run with a 31-21 win over York Castle High who lost a fourth straight.
Chrisana Thorpe led Mt Alvernia with 10 points and five rebounds as they recovered from a first-quarter deficit to outscore Herbert Morrison 17-11 over the second half.
Herbert Morrison led 9-8 after the first quarter, but Mt Alvernia came back in the second quarter to lead by one point 12-11 at half-time and stayed in front 17-16 at the end of the third quarter.
Abigail Wright scored nine points and had seven rebounds for Mt Alvernia, while Petrina Brown scored six points and had eight rebounds.
Danyce Murray led all scorers with 14 points and had six rebounds, while three others scored two points each.
In the other game, Moeeka Brown scored 12 points and had three rebounds and three steals as Muschett High won comfortably after racing to a 16-6 lead at half-time.
Shaday Shereves scored six points for Muschett high and had three rebounds as Sanique Sinclair scored five points and had 10 rebounds.
Serina Parchment had nine points, eight rebounds and five steals for York Castle, Mavay Greaves scored six points and had six steals and five rebounds and Kayla James scored four points and eight rebounds.
