Phenom not sure for Guineas
DESPITE a relatively good win by three-year-old chestnut colt Phenom on Wednesday last, trainer Steven Todd is still not sure whether or not his charge will be placed in the 2000 Guineas which is set for Sunday, April 14 over one mile (1,600m).
Phenom beat rivals at the non-winners of two level by 1 ½ lengths down the five-straight, coming home in a time of 1:00.1 — with apprentice Christopher Mamdeen doing the work in the saddle.
“The opportunity came for him ( Phenom) to get a win and we said that the race is a sprint one and that could not have been stressful on him, and so we just capitalised on it and he came home pretty good. Overall, I think it was a good performance.
“As to the Classics, we are still thinking about it but we are not 100 per cent sure we will go there because the thinking right now is that Phenom is more of a sprinter than a stayer. We might bypass the 2000 Guineas but we are still not sure. I am going to talk to the owner to confirm what we are going to do with him after this,” Todd stated.
All six runners had a good start but after about a furlong, Enedina (Dane Nelson) assumed sole leadership of the race over Phenom and Outrageous. Coming across the dummy rails, Phenom challenged Enedina for the lead as both runners began to draw clear.
Inside the final furlong (200m), Phenom proved the stronger by edging away for a comfortable win – his second from seven career starts.
Enedina held on for second, with Bold Smile (Anthony Thomas) outbattling Western Wheels for third.
