The second leg of the UEFA Champions League Quarter final matches happened last week and has us excitedly awaiting the semi finals. The first leg matches of the semis are scheduled for April 30 and May 1. Here is the UCL tea you’ve been waiting for.

Ajax vs. JuventusThe competition’s dark horse Ajax sent Juventus packing after a 2-1 win last week Tuesday. The aggregate score ended up being 2-3 and for the first time since the 2009/2010 season Cristiano Ronaldo will not be in the semi finals of the competition. Juventus opened up the scoring with a Cristiano Ronaldo goal, and soon after Danny van de Beek responded with a goal. Matthijis de Light scored in the second half and sealed the win for Ajax. Juventus, while maintaining most of the possession, did not benefit from doing so. And even though they probably bought Ronaldo for UCL success, he was the only one scoring for Juventus throughout the knock out rounds, when it’s supposed to be a team effort. Weirdly enough, Paulo Dybala was substituted at half time. Where are Juve’s forwards during these crucial games? Anyway, Ajax is continuing their fairy-tale journey in UCL and will be facing Tottenham Hotspurs in the semi finals. I predict Ajax to advance to the finals but of course, the ball is round.   

Barcelona vs. Man-UBarcelona knocked Manchester United out of the competition with a 3-0 win last Tuesday. With an aggregate score of 4-0, Manchester United didn’t even have a chance. The goals for the second leg came from Lionel Messi and Phillipe Coutinho. Yes, you read that correctly, Lionel Messi scored in the quarter finals for the first time since 2013. Manchester United’s best bet was to outscore Barcelona at Old Trafford and try to contain them at home since Barcelona have a fantastic home record. However, Manchester United didn’t respond to any of Barcelona’s goals. Barcelona will play Liverpool in the semi finals and it’s probably very likely we will have a Barcelona vs Ajax finals but we can’t write off Klopp and his team so easily.  

Liverpool vs. PortoLiverpool held their ground and knocked Porto out with a 4-1 scoreline last week Wednesday. Porto was bruised with a 1-6 aggregate score and will have to kiss Champions League glory goodbye. Liverpool had goals coming from Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Virgil van Dijk. Porto’s consolation goal came from Eder Militao. Liverpool will really be tested as they face a strong Barcelona side for the semi finals. Can Liverpool reach the finals for a second consecutive year? Guess we’ll have to wait and see.  

Man City vs. TottenhamManchester City bowed out of the competition to Tottenham Hotspurs last week Wednesday in arguably the best match of the season. Even though Manchester City won the second leg 4-3, Spurs went through on away goals as the aggregate scored was tied at 4-4. The match was exciting, dramatic and everything you love and hate about football. The first half was all out attack from both sides and gave us five delicious goals. Raheem Sterling opened up the scoring, scoring two in that half. Heung-Min Son also scored two goals, the final goal from that half came from Bernardo Silva. The second half produced less goals but was filled with drama. Sergio Aguero scored for City, leaving the score at 4-2 on the night. With City having one foot into the semi finals, the Eithad was energetic. However, Fernando Llorente ended up scoring the winning goal for Spurs, bringing the aggregate score to 4-4. In the dying moments of the match, Sterling netted what we thought was his hat-trick and his ticket to the semi finals. However, after VAR was utilized, Aguero was deemed to be offside in the buildup and therefore Sterling’s goal didn’t count, breaking the hearts of all City fans in an instant. What was interesting about this match was that a Harry Kane-less Spurs managed to pull this off. Spurs will be without Kane and Son in the first leg the semi finals and the only way to the finals is by replicating an electric performance like this against Ajax. Do you think they can do it?
