Former vice-president of the Jamaica Skeet Club, Leighton Sasso, was the happy winner of the Spring Open Sporting Clays which was held recently at the club’s headquarters in Portmore. Runner-up Geoffrey Ziadie was just one bird behind on 79.

Sasso, who shot 80 to be declared the highest overall winner, said: “I am very happy for the win. It’s been a long time since I have been at the top of the podium and this win feels good.”

He added: “It was a very technical and difficult course coupled with highwinds throughout the day.” Sasso went on to say that the relatively low scores attest to the difficulty of the 14-station course which was set by course setters Bruce Duquesnay and Oneil Browm.

Two of the 75 shooters who competed in the Spring Open Sporting Clays gained promotion to higher classes. Female shooter Renee Rickhi was promoted to D Class from E Class while Edward Zacca moved to E Class from Hunters or beginners class. The shooters gained promotion as a result of winning their classes.

The shooters had to pick off 100 birds or targets on the day.

The top three in the various classes were: A Class — Ray McMaster 78, Gregory Chong 76 and David Subaran 75; B Class — new president of the Jamaica Skeet Club Jordan Samuda 75, Peter Mahfood 68 and Jeffrey Panton 61; C Class — Ricky Duquesnay 74, Damien Sayers 72 and Ryan Chung 71; D Class — J J Ralston 65, Mark Benjamin 64 and Kirk Lalah also shot 64 but the placement was made using the long run method which is based on the scores at a pre-determined station; E Class — Renee Rickhi 52, Ryan Lue 51 and Cody Delisser 51 — the positions were determined by long run; Hunters Class — Edward Zacca 63, Justin Samuda 57 and Gregory East 51; Ladies Class — national female champion Wendy McMaster 61, Renee Rickhi 52 and Yasmin Benjamin 48; Junior Class — J J Ralston 65, Roman Tavares Finson 62 and Nathan Chin 58; Sub Junior Class — Richard Todd 63, David Wong 63 — the final placement was made based on a shoot-off between the two shooters which went to Todd and Ryan Lue 51.
