KINGSTON, Jamaica — Commuters have been experiencing poor visibility along the Mandela Highway due to smoke caused by a fire at one of the canefields next to the busy thoroughfare, which connects St Catherine and St Andrew.

Traffic was at a standstill earlier, as motorists moved slowly through the thick smoke that covered sections of the roadway.

When contacted, an officer from the Ferry Police Station, located in the vicinity, said the situation vastly improved compared to an hour or two ago.

The officer said that while the fire wasn’t a big one, fire trucks are on location trying to extinguish the blaze.

In the meantime, Corporate Communications Manager at the Jamaica Urban Transit Company Limited (JUTC) Cecil Thoms told OBSERVER ONLINE that the state-run bus company is continuing its service along the roadway.

He said the company is aware of the situation and the relevant authorities are at this time working to ensure that motorists are not obstructed.
