This is the eighth in a 10-part series highlighting sound system selectors. Today, the spotlight is on 38-year-old Military Links from Lampard, Clarendon.

Kevin Jackson (KJ): Do you specialise in a particular era of music?

Military Links (ML): No, I do not. I play many different genres because I personally love many different genres and eras of music.

KJ: What type of demographic usually attends dances you play at?

ML: That depends on the geographical location, promotional brand and concept of the event.

KJ: When you get a new rhythm, can you tell if it is going to be a hit?

ML: Easily, I can tell. I have an ear for quality music.

KJ: What is your real name and how did you come by the name Military Links?

ML: My real name is Tavien Morris. Military Links was a concept derived from my passion for music and the army, growing up. I spent six years in the Jamaica Defence Force between 2000 and 2006. It was then I started my collection of CDs and freestyling, and learning to mix properly. So hence the name Military Links, a selector and soldier at the same time.

KJ: What sound systems have you been affiliated with over the years?

ML: Ghetto Rock, Legend Mobile, Super Phonic, Black Roots and Black Kat.

KJ: The Government has announced a state of emergency for three parishes, St James, Hanover and Westmoreland. What are your thoughts about this initiative to help curb crime?

ML: I think it is a good initiative that should continue for all parishes. It just needs the non-political support from the Government, Opposition and stakeholders.

KJ: What is your advice to up-and-coming selectors?

ML: I would advise them to love what they do, be professional, have a clean heart, accept constructive criticism, be humble and adaptive.

KJ: What have been some of the most memorable events you have played?

ML: Magnum Riva Bash, and Retro on The Roof in Kingston.

KJ: Reggae is celebrating 50 years this year. What would you recommend Government do to commemorate this milestone?

ML: Put in measures to preserve the cultural side of our music, capitalise on the potential wealth that can be derived to boost our economy, host major reggae festivals right here on the island, promote brand reggae through more public education and put in the necessary measures to protect our local artistes and players in the industry.

KJ: What are your top five hottest songs at the moment?

ML: Toast — Koffee, Owna Lane — Teejay, Any Weather — Vybz Kartel, Blessings — Tommy Lee Sparta, Hillside — Chronic Law.
