Gros Islet cop Sandals/SLNCA National Under-19 Cup
Sandals Resorts International, the principal sponsor of West Indies cricket, continued to deepen its investment in the sport at the foundation level, and this past weekend marked the conclusion of the Sandals/SLNCA National Under-19 Cup in Saint Lucia.
Sandals is happy to congratulate tournament winners Gros Islet, who defeated Babonneau at Darren Sammy National Cricket Stadium by 143 runs to capture the coveted title for the second year running.
Batting first, Gros Islet posted a massive 323-5 in their allotted 45 overs, built around a magnificent 157 from Lee Solomon — his third century of the tournament. He was well supported by Jehan Boodha with 47.
Chasing a very challenging total, Babonneau were bowled out for 180 in 38 0vers. Rashaad Gaston and Zahee Antoine both scored 50, while Lee Solomon returned with the ball to take 3-27, with Tyrel Chicot also picking up three wickets for 33 runs.
In handing over the trophy to Gros Islet captain Kimani Melius, regional public relations manager of Sandals (EC), Sunil Ramdeen confirmed the company’s support for developing the region’s young players.
“At Sandals we believe in doing all we can to support the communities where we operate. This is the second year we have sponsored the National Under-19 Cup in Saint Lucia, and we are pleased to see the tremendous strides being made by the island’s youth players, some of whom are already selected or in line for selection at both national and regional level.
“We want to assure the young cricketers that Sandals will continue to play its part as a responsible corporate citizen in Saint Lucia and throughout the region.”
Sandals also sponsors the Under-19 cricket tournament in Jamaica.
President of the Saint Lucia National Cricket Association Julian Charles commended the young players on an exciting tournament, and urged them to ensure they position themselves for regional selection.
He also praised tournament sponsors Sandals Resorts International for investing in the development of cricket in Saint Lucia and throughout the Caribbean.
