Energy minister urges ‘speedy settlement’ of JPS wage impasse
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Minister of Science, Energy and Technology, Fayval Williams is urging dialogue between the Jamaica Public Service Company (JPS), its employees and the Union of Clerical Administrative and Supervisory Employees (UCASE) to settle wage and fringe benefit negotiations.
Williams’ statement comes amidst power outages in sections of Kingston and St Andrew and St Thomas due to industrial action stemming from a breakdown in the negotiations at the Ministry of Labour yesterday.
Noting that electricity is an essential service and as such the matter is being closely monitored by the ministry, she urged the parties to “get to a speedy settlement in the best interest of all stakeholders”.
JPS said it has activated its contingency plans in order to minimise disruption in service to customers.
It further advised that it is making every effort to have power restored.
