Jamaican rallying pair of Jeffrey Panton and Michael Fennell Jr is recovering from injuries sustained during a high-speed crash in their Ford Focus World Rally Car on last weekend’s SOL Rally Barbados.

“At this time, Jeffrey is in stable condition at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Bridgetown. We would like to commend the excellent response and treatment given by the emergency and medical fraternity in Barbados,” said the family in an issued statement on Tuesday, June 4.

Co-driver Fennell Jr suffered no internal injuries in the incident which happened on Sunday, June 2.

The pair slid off at a corner 1 kilometre in special stage 14, impacting the surrounding scenery at 185km/h with a force of 11gs as taken from the RallySafe tracking equipment. Panton, having been cut out of the vehicle, was initially diagnosed with soft-tissue damage and a minor cut to the head by the medical team on the ground. Once at the hospital, a full evaluation revealed more serious injuries, nine cracked ribs, and two fractured clavicles. The car was extensively damaged.

Reports are that Panton will continue to be held at the hospital for further tests before he is officially discharged.

Panton and Fennell Jr were chasing their fifth straight Rally Barbados title and trying to come back from a time deficit accrued on Friday.

Bajans Dane Skeete and Tyler Mayhew were the eventual winners.
