Neymar Jr Five MVP follows dream to Portmore United
As the finals of the 2019 Red Bull Neymar Jr Five competition draws near, Orlando Watson, a student of the Bustamante High School in Clarendon, has his sights set on copping the national title tomorrow and making his first trip outside of Jamaica to play in the football mecca of Brazil.
“Trouper”, as he is affectionately called, shares that he has been playing since age four and said that a place with the reigning Premier League champions Portmore United FC is an immediate goal, after competing in the Red Bull Neymar Jr Five, he is expected to join the club for pre-season preparation.
“From I was little and living in Portmore, I always admired the club. I love how they play and how they organise themselves and I’m very happy to know I will have the chance,” says Watson, who was named the MVP during the qualifiers held in Clarendon. The opportunity was made possible by Red Bull’s partnering sponsor for the competition, telecommunications firm FLOW.
In addition to the Portmore United opportunity, Watson will also receive a $50,000 cash prize for his efforts that helped his team, Lionel Strikers, to secure a place in the finals of the Red Bull Neymar Jr Five competition.
Watson, who is in his final year of his secondary education, represented as a right midfielder for his school in the Under-14, Under-15 and daCosta Cup competitions over the past five years, and he also has plans of enrolling in a coaching programme at GC Foster College in September.
“That’s what I will be using the prize money for. For my education,” he smiled.
With regard to tomorrow’s finals, Watson said: “We are working hard for Sunday, training is going well, and now we are just focused on the mindset of the team.”
