Jamaica continue to hang on to third position in the medals

table at the World Championships in Doha, Qatar despite failing to win a medal

in two days.

Leaders United States of America increased their tally of medals on the sixth day of the championships on Wednesday (Oct 2), like they did the previous day.

Jamaica, on the other hand, like second-placed China, have remained

stagnant since Monday. Injuries and unfortunate circumstances have denied the

island the opportunity to win medals in events that the athletes were among the

favourites to medal.

At the end of the day on Wednesday, Jamaica were still on four medals, two gold and two silver. The island mined gold medals in the women’s 100 metres through Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce and in the men’s long jump by Tajah Gayle. The mixed 4×400 metres team and Fredrick Dacres in the men’s

discus won the silver medals.

USA lead the table with 18 medals, as they earned a single gold medal on Wednesday, through 110 metres hurdler Grant Holloway. Jamaica’s defending champion Omar McLeod was a strong favourite for the title but crashed out after hitting the eighth hurdle. The USA have now garnered eight gold, eight silver and two bronze medals, with China second on two gold, three silver and three bronze.

Jamaica and Kenya both have four medals. The quality of the Jamaica’s medals are, however, superior, with Kenya getting two gold and two bronze.
