Reggae Girlz look to secure place in next stage of Olympic qualifiers
Jamaica’s Reggae Girlz will look to solidify their position in the CONCACAF stage of the Olympic Games qualifiers on Tuesday evening (Oct 8) when they tackle the US Virgin Islands in the final match of Group B of the Caribbean Football Union stage.
The game starts at 6:30 and will be the second of two matches at the National Stadium with Cuba battling St Lucia in the first at 4:00 pm.
The Reggae Girlz need only one point to secure their
position in the CONCACAF round of the qualifiers, but barring a gargantuan
effort from both US Virgin Island and Cuba, Jamaica can afford to lose the
match and still qualify.
The Reggae Girlz lead the points standing as they have nine points from their three matches with second-placed Cuba on six. Barbados is also on six points but Barbados have already completed their fixture with no hope of gaining additional points.
Cuba with a victory over St Lucia, can join Jamaica on nine points if the Reggae Girlz lose to the hapless US Virgin Islands, who have lost all their matches so far. But even so, it will not be easy to displace the Reggae Girlz at the top of the standing, as they have a massive goal difference of 29, with Cuba on zero.
The winners of Group B of the CFU round will advance to the CONCACAF round of the qualifiers, where they will join giants the United States of America, Canada and Mexico. Also joining the CONCACAF round will be the winners of the two other CFU groups as well as the qualifiers from Central America.
