Molynes take aim at top in Humble Lion meeting
Promoted outfit Molynes United will be intent on resuming winnings ways when they meet Humble Lion in one of three early Red Red Stripe Premier League (RSPL) contests at Effortville Community Centre in Clarendon today at 3:30 pm.
The other early fixtures will see Dunbeholden FC welcoming University of the West Indies (UWI) FC at Royal Lakes, while former champions Arnett Gardens will visit Vere United at Wembley Centre of Excellence, also in Clarendon.
Meanwhile, Harbour View FC will be at home to Tivoli Gardens in the day’s late contest at 7:00 pm.
The fixture involving champions Portmore United (eighth position on 10 points) and Mount Pleasant FA (seventh-place on 10 points) has been pushed back to Wednesday, as the former is currently in Connecticut for a friendly game.
After tasting their first defeat in top-flight football, second-placed Molynes United, on 19 points, will be hoping to shake that disappointment and assume pole position ahead of leaders Waterhouse (19 points), who will be involved in Monday night action against fourth-placed Cavalier (11 points) tomorrow.
However, recouping that 1-3 loss to Cavalier last week will be no easy feat against fifth-placed Humble Lion (11 points), who are also intent on extending their three-match unbeaten streak.
Still, the Lij Simms-coached Molynes United having racked up 12 goals so far this season and should fancy their chances, as Humble Lion’s last two results ended goalless as a result of poor finishing.
That said, Humble Lion and Coach Andrew Price are not expected to roll over and surrender three points, especially at home.
Coming off a 1-0 win over reigning champions Portmore United on last, sixth-place Arnett Gardens, with 11 points, are favoured to secure a second-straight win, and their fourth of the season, against the struggling Vere United.
Vere United, the other promoted team, started life in the nation’s top flight with victory over Portmore United, but have since found the going tough and, as a result of that, are rooted at the foot of the 12-team standing on six points.
While they would wish to turn their fortunes just about now, it is not highly favourable that that will happen against a now-settled Arnett Gardens unit giving very little away.
The contest between 10th-placed Dunbeholden (seven points) and 11th-placed UWI FC (six points) could go either way as both are struggling for consistency.
Finally, third-placed Harbour View (12 points) are expected to prove a handful for ninth-placed Tivoli Gardens (eight points), who are still a shadow of themselves from previous seasons.
The ‘Stars of the East’ are currently enjoying a four-match unbeaten run and, while failing to score in their two previous encounters, they could be ripe to beak the dry spell against their West Kingston opponents, who eked out their second win of the season last time out.
But football is a game of glorious uncertainty, and regardless of form, the outcome could heavily dependent on which team performs better on the day and, more importantly, capitalise on their chances.
