Defending champions Kingston College (KC) whipped Charlie Smith High 5-0, while Jamaica College and St George’s College battled to a 1-1 draw in their quarter-final round matches in the ISSA/Digicel Manning Cup at National Stadium yesterday.

In the curtain-raiser at 2:00 pm, two goals by Dwayne Atkinson in the 11th and 42nd led the way for KC, taking the scorer’s tally to 13 goals for the season.

Goals by Ronaldo Robinson (39th), Tyrese Williams (55th) and Demario McCarthy (77th) completed the rout for the defending champions.

KC moved to three points and atop Group A on goal difference ahead of Wolmer’s Boys’, who defeated Camperdown High 3-2 on Wednesday. Both Charlie Smith and Camperdown are pointless after the first set of games and with a lot of work to get back into contention.

Winning Coach Ludlow Bernard of KC said the most impressive piece of work this afternoon was the team’s goalscoring execution.

“I know we are going to create chance, however, we don’t have a very good ratio when it comes to chances created and goals scored. So I am pretty satisfied with a five-star performance this week,” said Bernard.

“But we still have some work to do because there were times in the game when Charlie would have tested some aspects of our game and we figured that during the short space of time, we will have to find the time to address these issues,” he noted.

Charlie Smith barely got a look in all game and Coach Jerome Waite thought his “young team” has a lot to learn

“First and foremost congratulations to the Kingston College team and well tried Charlie Smith. Charlie Smith is a young team and this is what I have been saying at the start of the season and one of the objectives was to ensure that these youngsters gain more experience as well as exposure.

“The fact that they came out of their zone they will understand what it is to play at this level. The first round is nothing. They were up against the defending champions and today they really dominated the game right throughout,” said Waite.

In the feature encounter, JC and St George’s College battled to a 1-1 draw which left St Andrew Technical High School (STATHS) atop Group B with three points, following their 4-0 mauling of Excelsior High.

Former Wolmer’s Boys’ and Dunoon Technical player Nickache Murray netted for JC in the 60th minute following a brilliant run down the left flank by Omar Thompson, formerly of Vauxhall High and KC.

But Chantomoi Taylor earned a precious point for St George’s College netting in the 90+2 minutes for a share of the spoils.

STATHS lead the Group with three points while Excelsior High are pointless.

The Manning Cup will take a break over the weekend to facilitate the playing of the all-island Champions Cup knockout on Friday and Saturday.
