Jamaica Rifle Association’s (JRA) archery captain, Norman Chen, believes Jamaicans are showing promise in the sport.

Chen gave his assessment following the body’s Beginners Archery tournament at its headquarters in St Andrew on Sunday, Nov (3).

Kristof Street was impressive, as he won the final stage with a perfect round. He captured three gold and one silver medals to be crowned champion of the event.

According to Chen, Street’s breakout performance and the overall standard of the competition were impressive.

Chen said, “On a whole, the performance was excellent. Jamaica is great at many sports and we want archery to be on that list as well, so coach Page Brown and I are trying to introduce it to new competitors and we were really encouraged by the scores we saw from our beginners at this tournament. Kristof had a particularly good competition. He is showing great promise for the future and now as we are looking to build a national team to represent Jamaica internationally. Seeing a new archer doing so well is very encouraging.”

The competition had 20 first-time participants, with Street shooting a perfect round on the final stage of the competition as he amassed 415 points. He finished ahead of Marjaan Medley, who tallied 360 points and Kirk Henderson, who got 345.

Street said, “It’s pretty gratifying to win my first tournament and also to have shot a perfect round on the final stage, which was a hard round for everybody, but I managed to stay focused. Once I got the first shot in, I knew I just had to do the same thing over and over and it worked out.”
