PORT ANTONIO, Portland — As the Portland Football Association Western Union Major League got underway on Sunday, newly formed Portlanders FC made a winning start clipping Port Antonio Academy 1-0 at Carder Park.

The goal was scored by Portlanders FC Omar Walters in the 48th minute.

From the first whistle, Portlanders went on the offensive through Marlon Martin, Demar Easington, Lucas Simpson and Kemar Miller. The newcomers’ efforts were, however, thwarted by Port Antonio Academy defenders Alex Gordon, Tyrese Horne and Kamar Campbell.

On the other end, Port Antonio Academy attacks were led by Benjamin Byfield, Jerome McLeary, Robert Marks and Dwayne Hylton, but they were denied by Portlanders FC’s custodian Joseph Green, and defenders Jason Whyte and Christopher Barnes.

Having threatened their opponents’ goal throughout, Portlanders took the lead shortly after the half-time break when Kemar Miller moved down the left flank and squared to Walters just outside the penalty area, who beat goalkeeper with a left-foot shot.

Port Antonio tried desperately to get back in the game, but were unable to breach Portlanders’ defence.

In other games Ujama went by Berrydale 2-0 and Progressive edged Farkland 2-1.

In the Portland FA Under- 15 competition curtain-raiser, Port Antonio Academy went by Portlanders 2-0, Ujama slammed Berrydale 7-0, the same as Progressive over Farkland.
