St Catherine High and Jonathan Grant high both advanced to the next round of the ISSA/Digicel Walker Cup Knockout competition after registering contrasting results over Holy Trinity and Eltham High, respectively, at Spanish Town Prison Oval yesterday.

The Anthony Patrick-coached St Catherine team came from behind to beat Holy Trinity 2-1, while Jonathan Grant clipped Eltham 1-0 in the feature game of the double header.

Another pair of St Catherine-based teams, St Jago and Hydel, will seek to book their spots in the next round when they face Mona and Vauxhall, respectively, today at 1:00 pm and 3:00 pm, at the same venue.

After a slightly cagey start by both teams in yesterday’s curtain-raiser, Holy Trinity eventually grabbed the ascendancy in the latter stages of the first half when Kevaughn Rickets scored an unlikely goal from inside the 18-yard box in the 39th minute.

On the resumption, the momentum shifted in favour of St Catherine, who put in a workmanlike shift to claw their way back into the contest, and by extension, come away with the win.

After hitting a clear-cut chance over the crossbar, Assanie Brown fired in a weighted corner kick that fell nicely to Javaughn Cole, who tapped in at the far post in the 58th minute.

Six minutes later, Brown added his name to the scoresheet after picking up and firing home a pass from Kamain Davis.

The Devon Anderson-conditioned Holy Trinty fought hard to get back on level terms but failed in their bid to find the elusive equaliser that would have sent the game straight to penalty.

Holy Trinity were left in despair as their last effort on goal courtesy of Shemari Glade hit the crossbar five minutes from time.

In the feature contest, Eltham started favourites to the next round, but Jonthan Grant had other ideas, as they started like a house on fire with no intentions of relenting.

They found the lead in the 17th minute through a breathtaking 30-yard free kick powerfully driven home by Jaheim Jones, which left Towayne Smith no chance at a save.

That turned out to be the all-important strike of the game as Jonathan Grant failed to add to their tally, despite the consistency in applying pressure to an Eltham outfit that looked a shadow of themselves from first and second-round Manning Cup action.

Eltham for their part produced a more purposeful second-half display, but like Jonathan Grant, they too lacked conviction and composure in the final third and as such, will have to wait until next year for another shot at a title.
