‘He will be greatly missed’: JAAA mourns passing of Jamaican Olympian Michael Fray
Jamaica’s Olympic Games sprint specialist Michael Fray died on Wednesday from an apparent suicide. Fray was found hanging at an office in downtown Kingston.
It is understood that Fray was staying at the office after the residence in which he lived was ravaged by fire last weekend.
Fray
represented Jamaica at the Olympic Games in Mexico City in 1968 and Munich in
1972.
The Jamaica Athletic Administrative Association (JAAA), in a release, expressed regret at the passing of Fray. The JAAA said: “He will be greatly missed by the athletic fraternity. The JAAA extends our condolences to his family and friends.”
Mexico City Olympics
He was a member of Jamaica’s 4×100 metres team at 1968 Mexico City Olympics. He ran the second leg, which established a world record of 38.39 seconds in the semifinals that eclipsed the mark of 38.6 they had set earlier in the heats. The team, however, finished fifth in the final.
Fray was seventh in the 200 metres at the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico City, then returned four years later at the Munich games to finish fifth in the 100 metres.
Fray,
who attended St Andrew Technical High School (STATHS), also competed for
Jamaica at the 1966 British Empire Commonwealth Games and the 1967 Pan American
Games.
