It was a remarkable day at the races for trainer Anthony Nunes and jockey Dane Nelson as they both racked up five winners each on the 11-race programme, including the three trophy races on offer to kick start in spectacular fashion the two-day Diamond Mile race meet at Caymanas Park yesterday.

Nelson, who was riding for the first time since returning from his stint in Canada, combined to win three races which were highlighted by Legality, who won the fifth running of the Betting, Gaming and Lotteries Stakes over seven furlongs (1,400m); Princess Ava, who won the Division 2 of the fifth running of the Supreme Ventures Diamond Sprint Trophy over six and a half furlongs (1,300m) and two-year-old Royal Approach in the second race in a maiden event. Royal Approach had finished in second position but was awarded the race after winner Eroy (Robert Halledeen) was disqualified by the race day stewards.

Nunes’ other winners were Prince Charles, who won Division 1 of the fifth running of the Supreme Ventures Diamond Sprint Trophy and Latapy, winner of a Restricted Stakes event over one mile (1,600m). Both Prince Charles and Latapy were ridden by apprentice Reyan Lewis, who had a triple on the day, as he earlier guided home Beltane for trainer Wayne Parchment in the fourth race.

Nelson was also successful aboard Msymyrtlerichiegirl for trainer Patrick Lynch in the first race and Classy Vishala coming down the five-straight course for trainer David Powell in the fifth race.

Nelson brought Princess Ava from second to last in the Restricted Stakes event to nip long-time leader Cryptocurrency (Oneil Mullings) on the line, winning by a neck to equal the Stakes Record time of 1:18.3 done by Loose Cannon in 2017, who incidentally was also ridden by Nelson.

Nunes and Nelson then brought the house down with racing fans flagging the outside rails the moment Legality picked up the lead in deep stretch and went on to score by 1 ¼ lengths over stable companion Earn Your Stripes (Christopher Mamdeen) in a decent time of 1:25.0.

Prince Charles was a comfortable two-and-a-half length winner over Formal Fashion (Kiaman McGregor) and Big Bang (Robert Halledeen) in a decent time of 1:18.4, just a tad outside of the existing Stakes Record.

Nunes has now cemented his lead in the trainers’ championship with these five wins.

“It was a blessed day. I could not have asked for anything more. I would like to thank all involved as for certain, I could not have brought home these five winners alone.

”But tomorrow (Saturday) is another day with some big money on offer and whatever happens, we just have to take it, as such is always racing,” Nunes told this publication after his fifth win.

Racing continues today with the second and final day of the Diamond Mile racing carnival.

The feature race is the Diamond Mile itself, which carries a purse of US$115,000 (JA$14 million). The race will the long-anticipated clash between She’s A Maneater and Stranger Danger, the top two horses at present in the land.
