IDB report estimates Dorian’s impact on the Bahamas at US$3.4b
A
new report by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) estimates that the
impact and effect of Hurricane Dorian on The Bahamas in September is US$3.4b.
The
report, titled, ‘Assessment of the Effects and Impacts of Hurricane Dorian in
the Bahamas’, said the estimate is approximately a quarter of the island
nation’s gross domestic product (GDP).
The
report said, “the magnitude of the losses requires a new development approach
to achieve climate and disaster resilience in areas that range from location of
settlements to redesigning infrastructure and strengthening environmental
protection.”
Hurricane
Dorian hit The Bahamas on September 1 as a category five storm causing
wide-scale destruction, while killing officially 67 people, with another 282
missing.

A
further 29,472 individuals were also affected by damages to their homes and
assets, as a result of inadequate construction and infrastructure located in
vulnerable areas.
