IT has been three months since singer Malica’s song Oh Me Oh My was released, and with Christmas in the air, she sees enough potential for it to be a smash in 2020.

“It definitely has raised my profile. We’re doing a lot of work to get geared up for a magnificent 2020 and beyond. We’re on the right track,” she said.

We happens to be Walshy Fire and Medz Music, co-producers of Oh Me Oh My which is among a handful of songs on the Green Rose rhythm which also features songs by Cocoa Tea, Bunji Garlin and Jesse Royal.

Oh Me Oh My was initially serviced in South Florida where Malica has lived since her teens. It is her latest project with her mentor, Walshy Fire, a former sound system selector whose stocks as a producer soared as a member of EDM heavyweights, Major Lazer.

Since its release, Malica says Oh Me Oh My has made inroads in Caribbean markets such as the influential tri-state area.

“It’s crazy how a song takes on a life of it’s own once its been released. I’m surprised at times to hear about my song being played in places I dream of visiting. The love is definitely being shown in Florida, Connecticut, New York and more,” she stated.

Malica was born in Brooklyn, New York, and lived in Kingston, before settling in South Florida. Most of her career has been with Walshy Fire; along with her younger brother Atiba, she has written songs for several acts he has worked with.

She has written songs such as Sweet & Loco by Nailah Blackman, Babylon Paper by The No-Maddz featuring Atiba and Mojo Morgan’s Till The End.

Though many in dancehall circles still consider New York City the genre’s hub, Malica believes the Sunshine State is just as competitive.

“The dancehall/reggae scene in Florida as a whole is dynamic and vivacious. Most people would be surprised to know how many reggae lovers come out in droves for dancehall/reggae events in unexpected areas like Daytona Beach, Jacksonville and especially St Augustine,” she said. “The same energy travels all the way south. I have to mention Orlando because not only are the events incredible, but the talent there is never ending. South Florida stands out not just for the talent but also the ability to network with some of the most prestigious industry professionals.”
