Sister Pashcal remembered as a matriarch of God for many children

KINGSTON, Jamaica – Sister Mary Paschal Figueroa, a Religious Sister of Mercy whose life started at the end of World War I in 1918 was laid to rest this morning after a digital thanksgiving service.

Sister Paschal during the thanksgiving service was remembered as a matriarch to many children during her long and distinguished service to God.

The thanksgiving service was attended by Prime Minister Andrew Holness, who as he has stated many times was greatly influenced by Sister Paschal during his years at St Catherine High School. The prime minister was accompanied by his wife Juliet, who was also a student at St Catherine High.

Sister Paschal was principal of the institution from 1972-1990, and was responsible for its growth into one of the largest high schools in the Caribbean, with an enrolment of over 3,000 students.

“Today, I attended the thanksgiving service for the life of our dear Sister Paschal. I continue to mourn her passing, but I reflect with deep gratitude on her rich contribution to my own life and that of the thousands of students who passed through St. Catherine High School,” Holness said.
