Commendation to the Ministry of Health and Wellness, Jamaica Teachers’ Association, and all stakeholders who continue to search for the right formula that permits a conclusive online or distance learning platform for our teachers and students.

There is enough blame to go around politically, academically, and socially regarding the coronavirus in Jamaica, therefore, let us use this opportunity to be proactive with life after COVID in education.

While we have dropped the ball in how technology has been integrated into the traditional setting of our classrooms, let us now broaden the discussion and create a task force that will focus on the transitional social behaviour of our students when they return to the learning environment.

Socialization is a process that supports individuals to learn and embrace information, values, skills, and attitudes. Therefore, our school environment is a reflection of society or a glance into the future. Learning takes place through the medium of socialization. The Jamaican school system has become a bridge that holds our community together.

Today, we are faced with a change in our society and how we socialize; our children have now been acclimated to the Government’s requirement in dealing with this pandemic.

Our children’s academics have affected by our failure to be proactive; however, we now should prepare to deal with the psychological indifferences that will face teachers when they return to school.

All the people who have had the great experience of the Jamaican classroom, imagine that space without socialization. No sharing of textbooks, no sharing of pencils, and staying away from each other, wearing masks, peers fear to cough or sneeze, and the teacher staying directly behind the desk.

While there will be a vaccine one-day, we must prepare for the transition in our education system from COVID to CO-LIVE.
