COVID-19: Here’s what you need to know today

KINGSTON, Jamaica — More than 127 million coronavirus infections have been confirmed worldwide, with over 127.5 million people across 196 countries and territories having died. Majority of those infected have recovered.

Many countries have rolled out vaccine campaigns and started to inoculate citizens as economies struggle to recover.

— Jamaica recorded 334 new cases of COVID-19 and one additional death yesterday bringing the total number of cases to 38,848 and the death toll to 587.

— The World Health Organization chief today called for investigators looking into the origins of the COVID-19 pandemic to delve deeper into a theory about a possible lab leak incident.

— Guyana yesterday received 24,000 doses of the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine through the COVAX facility – the first quota of vaccines Guyana has received through the global initiative.

— Cuba began vaccinating tens of thousands of health care workers with a second COVID-19 vaccine yesterday, even though it has yet to complete clinical trials.

— The German state of Berlin is again suspending the use of AstraZeneca’s coronavirus vaccine for people under 60 due to reports of blood clots.

— The chances that COVID-19 emerged in Wuhan because of imported frozen food are “very low”, international health experts said yesterday, casting doubt on one of the main theories China has embraced for the cause of the first coronavirus outbreak in late 2019.

— The Government of Canada yesterday announced that it would contribute CAN$1.2 million (US$950,000) to support the efforts of PAHO in its fights against COVID-19 in Jamaica and five other Caribbean countries.

— The United States has so far recorded 550,036 deaths, making it the hardest-hit country. Meanwhile, Brazil has recorded 313,866 deaths, Mexico 201,826, India 162,114, and the United Kingdom 126,615.
