Koffee creates stir at Coachella
GRAMMY-WINNING artiste Koffee enjoyed an impressive baptism at the internationally acclaimed Coachella music and art festival in California on Saturday.
She made her debut on the main stage close to 6:15 pm Jamaica time and delivered a seamless and entertaining set that ran just a whisker short of 20 minutes.
“I feel really happy to see all these beautiful faces coming out here to support myself and my band all the way from Jamaica,” Koffee said to the audience.
She opened her Coachella account, mic pack in hand, with the aptly titled Rapture from her Grammy award-winning EP of the same name.
The one-time Calvin Klein model, with locs styled down, was comfortably dressed for the west coast’s Colorado Desert in a white sleeveless T-shirt and sunshine yellow shorts, complete with white shoes, white socks and a yellow- and powder blue-coloured hat, which she gently tossed aside within a minute of her performance.
To the delight of fans in the audience the ‘new Grammy Kid’ performed a half-dozen songs for her first Coachella gig. The set list was sprinkled with her signature ad libs, and a sustained vocal clarity from the singer that could easily double for the studio -recorded versions of her songs.
After Rapture, Koffee performed Gifted, x10, Run Away, and Lockdown from her recently released major label debut Gifted.
In addition to her band, Koffee was flanked by a dancing trio whose moves engaged the space between the singer and her band while huge monitors installed at the back and sides of the stage provided better viewing angles for patrons to familiarise themselves with the singer on her debut at the festival.
“Are there any lovers in the audience?,” Koffee asked the patrons, further querying “Any couples out there? This one is for you guys,” before launching into Run Away.
The Ardenne High School alumna closed out the set with the wildly popular Toast.
“Thank you so much, Coachella,” the Colombia Records artiste said as she ceded the main stage to her band and dancers to close out the performance.
The Coachella music festival, which started on Friday, was making its return after being shelved for two years due to the novel coronavirus pandemic. It ends next Sunday.
