Carifta Games: Jamaica win three gold in 200m
KINGSTON, Jamaica – Rickoy Hunter, Brianna Lyston and Bryan Levell secured gold medals for Jamaica in the 200m finals at the 49th Carifta Games on Monday.
Hunter held off the field to win the boys’ Under-17 200 metre final, running a blistering curve and exploding down the stretch to win in 22.13 seconds. Keo Davis (22.19) of St Vincent and Grenadines was second in 22.18 while the other Jamaican in the field, Marchino Rose was third in 22.36.
Lyston won the girls’ Under-20 200 metre final with compatriot Kaylia Kelly finishing third.
The highly touted Lyston, who was a part of the world record relay team, was not to be upstaged, as she took charge of the event from start and opened up to win in 23.16 seconds. Trinidad and Tobago’s Shaniqua Bascombe (24.18s) was second with Kelly (24.33s) taking third after the fast-finishing Bahamian Paige Archer crashed out of contention.
Jamaica copped a one-two finish in the boy’s’ Under-20 200m.
Like he did at the recently-concluded ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys’ and Girls’ Athletic Championships, Edwin Allen’s Levell again proved too good for his compatriot, Sandrey Davison. Levell won going away in 21.18 seconds, with Davison stopping the clock in 21.35. Grenada’s Nazzio John was third in 21.70.
Jamaica was denied a clean sweep of the 200m by the brilliant Adaejah Hodge of British Virgin Islands, who secured her third gold medal of the 49th Carifta Games when she topped the girls’ Under-17 200 metre final. The talented 16-year-old turned back the challenge of the Jamaican pair of Sabrina Dockery (24.25s) and Theianna Lee Terrelonge (24.64s) who were second and third respectively.
