Human remains found in casket in old Lodge building in St Thomas
ST THOMAS, Jamaica — The St Thomas police say human remains have been found during a demolition exercise by the Parish Council at a dilapidated building across from the Morant Bay Police Station Sunday morning.
Details reaching OBSERVER ONLINE are that the building is an old lodge building.
The police are still processing the scene but have confirmed that the remains seem to be that of a human.
Speaking with OBSERVER ONLINE, Morant Bay Councillor, Rohan Bryan shared that the building has been there since about the 16th century.
“We had decided that we have to tear the building down — it needs to be demolished because there are some boards hanging off of it,” he said.
Noting that he was eating breakfast when he got a call from the mayor regarding the casket with human remains found during the exercise, the councillor said: “It’s an old — a nuh casket like today casket, it’s an old-time something.”
According to Bryan, two skulls were reportedly found at the scene.
He said the area has since been cordoned off and firefighters are also now on the scene combing through the building.
