OBLIQUE Seville became the fastest Jamaican man over 100m since the retirement of the great Usain Bolt when he stormed to a lifetime best of 9.86s on Saturday to win the men’s 100m final at Meet 3 of the four-part Jamaica Athletics Administrative Association/Sports Development Foundation Jubilee Series at the National Stadium.

The time run put him in illustrious company as he became the sixth-fastest Jamaican of all time.

Seville has been showing signs that this year would be a special one for him, and after running 10.00s flat two weeks ago at Meet 2 of the series, the sprinter declared that he was almost there but had a few technical issues which needed correcting.

With Meet 3 postponed from last week due to the plethora of Jamaicans running all over the world, the 21-year-old had one extra week to fix whatever needed fixing — and it worked. He produced a scintillating display of sprinting that had the small crowd inside the National Stadium buzzing, and they gleefully jumped as a collective when they saw the time on the clock.

In as much as he stunned the crowd by dipping below 9.9 seconds, so did Seville stun himself.

“It’s a tremendous performance but I never expected 9.8 seconds. I expected 9.9,” he said.

The newest Jamaican member of the 9.8s club explained how he was able to break through the 10-second barrier after coming so close just a few days ago.

“The technical issues, I went back to the drawing board and me and my coach discussed it and we fixed what needed to be fixed.”

Seville is now expecting to get into a few Diamond League events after his performance on Saturday.

“It’s a tremedous feeiling [to run 9.86s] because I am among the greats, so I will be competing in the Diamond League and hopefully at the Trials. I am healthy,” he said.

Following this breakthrough on the weekend, the former Calabar High school standout will be focusing on making the World Championships team.

“That’s my main aim right now, to make the World Championships team, because that’s the first stage before you go to the World Championships.”

Seville continues to build on his promise and no doubt will be seen as the future of Jamaica’s male sprinting after his stunner last Saturday.
