Gov’t committed to non-discriminatory approach to investments, says PM
MANDEVILLE, Manchester — Arguing that politics has divided Jamaicans for too long, Prime Minister Andrew Holness said Thursday that his Government is committed to supporting investments without any thought of discrimination.
“I am here because it is important to show that the Government has a duty to support everyone, regardless of affiliation, association, class, colour, creed, religion,” Holness said at a ground-breaking ceremony for a business process outsourcing (BPO) complex in Mandeville being constructed by Kenneth “Skeng Don” Black, central Jamaica businessman and strong supporter of the Opposition People’s National Party (PNP).
Black is the chief executive officer of the planned K and T Development BPO complex at Bloomfield on the outskirts of the Mandeville town centre.
Estimated to cost $1.2 billion, the project is being funded by the Development Bank of Jamaica and National Commercial Bank. The building contractor is China Harbour Engineering Company.
“This Government must ensure that there is equal opportunity for everyone in Jamaica and that we create a level playing field for all business people,” the prime minister said while lauding Black’s initiative.
Holness urged investors to recognise that his Government had no interest in their personal belief systems and links.
“I am here today to say it really doesn’t matter to me one way or the other who you are, where you come from, what is your affiliation, what are your views. You coming to invest, talk to me. You coming to build Jamaica, talk to me. You have a dream and a vision that is aligned with the dream and vision that we have espoused and you want to see Jamaica grow, talk to me,” the prime minister said.
“I want every Jamaican to feel that they have a role in this thing no matter politics. Politics has divided us for too long. Let us just come together now in business and make Jamaica grow for all of us,” he added and rejected what he described as “a sense sometimes that Government is out to get you”.
