Anderson breaks national record in 800m at NCAA outdoor champs
EUGENE, Oregon – Navasky Anderson broke the Jamaican national record in the men’s 800m after he ran 1:45.02 seconds for second place at the NCAA outdoor track and field championships at Hayward Field on the campus of the University of Oregon on Friday night.
The Mississippi State University runner, broke the 45-year-old record, one of the oldest on the Jamaican list, of 1:45.30 seconds set in May 1977 in Kingston.
Anderson, the former St Jago High runner who broke his own personal best 1:45.8 seconds that he set when he won the SEC outdoor title last month, also qualified for the World Championships to be held at the same venue in July.
Anderson had won his semi-final heat on Wednesday but just failed to catch Moad Zahafi who won with 1:44.49 seconds with Texas A&M’s Brandon Miller third in 1:45.09 seconds.
