GOING into the Jamaica St Leger Classic, trainer Patrick Lynch said that Blue Vinyl’s preparations didn’t change much and the routine should remain the same heading into the Jamaica Derby scheduled for August 6.

In a performance that represented class, talent, and all his fighting qualities, Blue Vinyl impressively defeated Atomica by 4¼ lengths in the 10-furlong (2,000m) event — the second jewel in the Triple Crown series of races last Saturday at Caymanas Park.

“The preparations coming into the St Leger for Blue Vinyl were the same as the preparations that were planned out going into 2000 Guineas. The only difference was that the race [St Leger] is just two furlongs more that the 2000 Guineas.

“The routine was just the same and he responded well to training. The instruction to the jockey was the same: ‘just ride the same race’. It is just two furlongs longer and he is super fit right now,” Lynch said.

Commenting on the Derby Lynch said: “Well, you know the Jamaica Derby is up my street, having won the big race twice with The Bomber and Drone Strike. I have a very good team at the stables, much respect for the owner and other people who made it possible.”

In winning the Jamaica St Leger, the chestnut colt Bern Identity, out of the Haynesfield mare Blufield, remained on course for possible Triple Crown glory, having won the 2000 Guineas in early June.
