Unfortunate social media behaviour
Dear Editor,
Like many, I saw the post of former Miss Universe Jamaica Kaci Fennell-Shirley on Twitter in which she gives an account of having been robbed of her purse after leaving a bank and entering a supermarket.
While I regret what happened to her, and am happy she was apparently not harmed, I found her social media post to have been extremely unfortunate for a number of reasons to include the damage same could cause to the establishment she was entering and to our image across the globe.
Fennell-Shirley is a former Miss Universe Jamaica and, as such, attracts a large social media following both here and abroad. For her to write, “You are literally safe nowhere in this country,” is a most unfortunate statement and, in her state of panic perhaps, surely didn’t seem to weigh the weight of her words and see the possible ramifications they could have on Jamaica’s image on the worldwide stage – something she, ironically, represented quite well during her reign as Miss Universe Jamaica.
Snatch and grab crimes sadly happen all over the world, not only Jamaica. Thankfully, Fennell-Shirley is OK to tell the tale, which I hope she will recount more thoughtfully in future.
