The Side Chick Song deejay earned a nomination in the category Push Performance of the Year for her March 2022 performance of R U That, featured on her debut album Alpha (Rich Immigrants/Interscope).

In a post on her Instagram stories, Shenseea wrote: “The first VMA nomination for me and Jamaica. Click the link and vote every day.”

The other nominees in the Push Performance of the Year category are September 2021: Griff – One Night – Warner Records; October 2021: Remi Wolf – Sexy Villain – Island Records; November 2021: Nessa Barrett – i hope ur miserable until ur dead – Warner Records; December 2021: SEVENTEEN – Rock With You – PLEDIS Entertainment/Geffen Records; January 2021: Mae Muller – Better Days – Capitol Records UK; February 2022: GAYLE – abcdefu – Atlantic Records/Arthouse Records; April 2022: Omar Apollo – Tamagotchi – Warner Records; May 2022: Wet Leg – Chaise Longue – Domino Recording Company; June 2022: Muni Long – Baby Boo – Supergiant Records LLC/Def Jam Recording; and, July 2022: Doechii – Persuasive – Top Dog Entertainment/Capitol Records.

The Push Performance of the Year category was instituted in 2018 and lasted until 2019 before it was merged with the Best New Artiste category and renamed Push Best New Artiste Award. However, the Push Performance of the Year again received its own category in 2021.

Shenseea is not the first Jamaican to be nominated for an MTV Video Music Award. In 2003 Sean Paul earned a nod for the video Get Busy in the category Best New Artiste in a Video.

Three years later, in 2006, he racked up two nominations for Temperature in the categories Best Dance Video and Best Choreography in a Video.

In 2009 Hold the Line by Major Lazer featuring Santigold and dancehall artiste Mr Lexx was nominated in the Breakthrough Video category.

And finally, singer OMI scored a nomination in 2015 for the song Cheerleader in the category Song of the Summer.

The 2022 MTV VMAs will be held on Sunday, August 28 at 8:00 pm ET/PT live from Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey.
